Energy system exports

In this document

You'll learn how to export your PV energy system design from the File menu: KML boundaries (site boundaries and exclusion zones for GIS/Google Earth), Collada 3D (.dae, full geometry including terrain, for Full evaluation projects), PVsyst (.pvc, geometry and module/tracker specs without terrain, for Full evaluation projects), AutoCAD DXF (CAD-ready, organized by layer with your chosen coordinate reference system), and the Bill of Materials (XLSX, including prices and custom items).

Exporting energy system data

Energy system designers offer exports in various formats to accommodate the most common scenarios. You can export:

  • 2D layout in PDF format.

  • Electric layout - exports the electric layout of the desing in .svg format.

  • KML (Keyhole Markup Language) boundaries data.

  • GeoJSON to export specific data in the .geojson format.

  • AutoCAD to export the design in .dxf format.

  • Collada 3D export in .dae format.

  • PVsyst format export.

You can access all exports from the “File” menu.

2D layout export

The 2D layout export (.pdf format) allows you to download a scaled plan view of your design, ready to print or share with stakeholders who don't have access to Evaluate. To open the export dialog, select 2D layout from the File menu/Exports, or press Ctrl+P.

The Export to PDF report settings panel opens on the right, where you can adjust the following before exporting:

  1. Layout: Auto-fit content fits the whole design to the page. Manual lets you set a fixed scale and pan the print frame to the area you want.

  2. Base layer: Lets you choose the background layer and its opacity on the PDF printout.

  3. Level of detail: You can choose to show/hide PV modules on the PDF.

When all set, click “Start export” and wait for the export to generate.

What is exported

The example below shows the resulting PDF.

Electric layout export

Electric layout lets you export the simplified electric scheme of your design, enabling you to see interconnections between transformers and inverter setups. You can switch to Electrical layout view to examine the layout, change connections, and relevant connection parameters. The design is exported in .svg format. You can also trigger this export directly from the Electrical layout view.

What is exported

Exports the connections layout to a .svg file. It will export the layout exactly as you see it in the Electrical layout view. The example is shown below.

KML boundaries export

The KML boundaries export allows you to download your project's site boundaries and exclusion zones that you can later import into Google Earth or other GIS software, enabling you to visualize your project's geographic context and share site information with stakeholders who don't have access to specialized PV design tools.

To download it, select the KML boundaries from the File menu/Exports. KML export contains Solargis-specific tags as stated in the Table 1.

What is exported

Export to a .kml file contains the following project data:

  • line object (path only)

  • restricted line (path + polygons)

  • restricted area

  • segments (polygon only)

GeoJSON export

The GeoJSON export (.geojson format) allows you to download your design as geographic features that you can open in QGIS, ArcGIS, or any web mapping library. GeoJSON is an open standard - each object carries both its geometry and a set of attributes specific to that object type — which makes it a good choice when you need your design as queryable GIS data rather than a drawing.

To download it, select GeoJSON from the File menu/Exports and choose one of two options:

  • Full — includes every object in the design, down to individual PV modules.

  • Without modules — excludes the individual PV module geometry, keeping segments, structures, roads, and electrical objects. This produces a considerably smaller file and is the better option on large plants, where the module count can make the full export slow to open in GIS software.

Note: If you need your design as CAD geometry organised into layers rather than as GIS features, use the AutoCAD (.dxf) export instead.

What is exported

What is exported

A single GeoJSON FeatureCollection (RFC 7946) containing:

  • PV modules — every individual module, with its position in the electrical hierarchy (inverter setup, inverter, MPPT, string, module)

  • PV tables — mounting tables, with the array each belongs to

  • Inverters and inverter transformers — footprints, named as in the designer

  • Grid connection — as a point

  • Segments and their inner exclusion zones

  • Component exclusion zones around inverters and transformers

  • AC medium-voltage cables — routes, with the full cable specification and the components each run connects

Tip: PV modules usually make up over 95% of all features. If you have a large energy system this could result in large export file — so choose Without modules unless you specifically need module-level geometry. All other layers, tables included, are retained.

AutoCAD (.dxf) report

This export converts your Energy System Designer layout directly to a DXF file — ready to open in AutoCAD or any compatible CAD tool, with no redrawing required.

The export includes:

  • Layers and attributes — objects are organized by layer, with attributes intact, so you can select, measure, label, and edit with confidence.

  • Coordinate system — choose the EPSG code your project requires, and the file is delivered in that coordinate reference system.

  • Consistent styling — all objects follow standard style defaults by type, and the exports look uniform across projects and teams.

Collada 3D export

Note: Collada export is available to Full evaluation projects only.

The Collada 3D export (.dae format) allows you to download your complete energy system geometry that you can import into third-party 3D software such as Blender. All geometries are exported including the terrain.

To download it, select the Collada 3d from the File menu/Exports. The file will be saved in .dae format.

What is exported

Export to .dae file contains the following project data:

  • table geometry information

  • inverters & transformers geometry

  • line objects geometry

  • segments geometry

  • terrain geometry

PVsyst export

Note: PVsyst export is available to Full evaluation projects only.

The PVsyst export (.pvc format) allows you to download your energy system geometry you can directly import into PVsyst. Unlike the Collada export, this does not include terrain data and contains PV module size and spacing information.

To download it, select PVsyst from the File menu/Exports. The file will be saved in .pvc format.

What is exported

Export to .pvc file contains the following project data:

  • table geometry information

  • inverters and transformers geometry

  • line objects geometry

  • segments geometry

  • PV module size

  • PV module spacing on the tables

  • minimum and maximum rotation angles (for N-S trackers)

  • rotation axis (for N-S trackers)
